What Is VA Community Care?

VA Community Care is a program run by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs that allows eligible veterans to receive care from a private, VA-approved provider instead of a VA medical center — typically because the VA can’t provide the needed care within its access standards for distance or wait time, or because a veteran qualifies under one of several specific eligibility categories. Once a veteran is referred and authorized, the VA covers the cost of approved treatment, similar to an insurance plan.

Because dental benefits through the VA are more limited than medical benefits, eligibility for VA dental community care depends on which of several eligibility classes a veteran falls into. If you’re not sure which class applies to you, our team and your VA case manager can help you find out.

Who Is Eligible?

Eligibility for VA dental care is grouped into classes established by the VA. In general terms:

  • Class I — Veterans with a service-connected dental condition or disability.
  • Class II — Veterans with a dental condition connected to a service-related injury or disease, generally eligible for one-time treatment.
  • Class III — Veterans with a dental injury or condition resulting from combat wounds or in-service trauma.
  • Class IV — Veterans who are rated 100% service-connected disabled, who may qualify for ongoing comprehensive dental care.
  • Class V — Veterans enrolled in a VA vocational rehabilitation program, where dental care is needed to complete the program.

Other categories and time limits may apply. The VA determines eligibility class and issues the community care authorization — our office does not make that determination, but we’re happy to help you understand what your authorization covers once it’s issued.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral before I can be seen?

Yes. VA Community Care requires an authorization from the VA before treatment begins. We’re unable to bill the VA for care that hasn’t been pre-authorized.

Is VA Community Care the same as dental insurance?

Not exactly. It’s a VA benefit program rather than a commercial insurance plan, and what it covers depends on your eligibility class and your specific authorization rather than a standard insurance plan design.

Will I have any out-of-pocket costs?

Most veterans have little to no out-of-pocket cost for treatment that falls within their VA authorization. Any treatment outside the authorized scope would be discussed with you in advance.

How long does authorization take?

Timing varies by VA facility and case load. We recommend staying in touch with your VA case manager while your referral is processed, and calling our office once you have your authorization details.

What if I’m not sure whether I’m eligible?

That’s okay — eligibility is determined by the VA, not by our office. Reach out to your VA health care team or call the VA directly to ask about your eligibility class, and give us a call once you know where things stand.
